How do I Cancel my SAT Score?

So you took the SAT, and you have a sinking feeling that you didn’t do as well as you wanted to. In fact, you’re so sure you didn’t well that you want to make sure no one ever sees your score–not even you. You can’t travel back in time and tell your past self not to take the test, but there is something you can do: You can cancel your score.

How do you cancel your SAT score?

First things first: If you want to cancel your score, you have to act fact. The College Board website states that you only have until 11:59 p.m. (Eastern Time) on the Wednesday after the test date to cancel your score. If you wait until after that deadline, there’s nothing you can do, and your score will become a part of your permanent SAT record.

And there’s something else: Your score cancellation request must be received by the College Board in writing, and with your signature. This means that emails and phone calls won’t cut it. If you leave the College Board a voicemail or send an email requesting that your score be cancelled, it won’t matter if you do it before the deadline–it won’t happen. The College Board is pretty strict about that, so make sure you follow this rule.

Finally, remember this: Once you officially request that your score get cancelled, you can’t change your mind. Your score will be cancelled, you won’t ever know how you scored, and your score can’t be reinstated later. It’s a very permanent thing.

There are two ways you can cancel your score: At the testing center, and after leaving the testing center. Here’s what the College Board has to say about each:

Canceling scores at the test center

To cancel a score at the test center, a student:

• • Asks the test supervisor for a Request to Cancel Test Scores Form

• • Completes and signs the form before leaving the test center

• • Returns the form to the test supervisor before leaving the center

Canceling scores after leaving the test center

Students may decide to cancel their scores after leaving the test center. We must receive the request to cancel scores in writing no later than 11:59 p.m. (Eastern Time) on the Wednesday after the test date. Students cannot submit cancellation requests by phone or email—their signature is required. Students with disabilitieswho test in school-based testing have until the Monday a week after the published test date to cancel their scores, due to the extended school-testing window.

Students must fill out and sign the Request to Cancel SAT Scores Form (.pdf/473K). Requires Adobe Reader (latest version recommended).

If they write a separate request, they must provide the following information:

• • Test date

• • Test center number

• • Name of test they are canceling—either SAT or SAT Subject Test

• • Name, address, sex, birth date, and registration number

• • Signature (required or the cancellation will not be processed)

The request should be labeled “Attention: SAT Score Cancellation” and should be sent by:

If you have any questions about cancelling your score, make sure to contact the College Board via phone (don’t send an email–it could take days for the College Board to get back to you, and they won’t honor a late cancellation request, even if you sent an email asking about it before the deadline).
