The Hunger Games: An Appetite for the SAT, Part II

Who said learning has to be relegated to the classroom? There are many valuable academic lessons in books and movies, and The Hunger Games is no exception. Consider the following vocabulary words from Chapter 1 of the novel by Suzanne Collins:

vermin: disgusting animals
*supple: flexible
forage: to search for
cinder: ashes or embers
deterrent: something that discourages or prevents
inciting: stirring or encouraging
*indifferent: showing lack of interest, concern, or bias
ration: an allotted amount of food
*sentimental: characterized by tender feelings, such as love and nostalgia
*verve: enthusiasm; liveliness
*affected (adj.): faked; pretended
apothecary: a pharmacist
iridescent: displaying shimmering colors
preposterous: absurd
haggling: bargaining
adorns: decorates
racketeer: a person involved in a dishonest scheme
sustenance: nourishment
obliterated: destroyed
delicacies: things that are delightful, fragile, or rare
*repentance: regret for wrongdoings
token (adj.): representing minimal or symbolic effort

*SAT Repeat Offenders

Twenty two vocabulary words from just a single chapter! If all 27 chapters are as packed with vocabulary, you have the opportunity to learn nearly 600 new words while reading a very entertaining book! We recommend that you keep a pen and paper in the book, and write down each new word with which you are unfamiliar. You can use the context surrounding each word to craft a definition or use a dictionary to define all of the words when you complete each chapter. Many of our former students report that reading these books or classic novels just before a test helps with vocabulary retention, and vocabulary is tested on both the Sentence Completion and Reading Comprehension portions of the Critical Reading section of the SAT.
