SAT Tip of the Week

describe the imageWondering how to work a complex-looking operation like this: 5(1 + 4)² – 10

Use PEMDAS!

P(arenthesis)
E(xponent)
M(ultiplication)
D(ivision)
A(ddition)
S(ubtraction)

Let’s look at an example of an expression in which of the order
of operations is required:

5(1 + 4)² – 10

Begin with operation in the parentheses (P): 5(1 + 4)² – 10 = 5(5)² – 10
Now remove the exponents (E): 5(5)² – 10 = 5(25) – 10
Multiplication and division are next (M/D): 5(25) – 10 = 125 – 10
Finally, addition and subtraction are performed (A/S): 125 – 10 = 115

The answer is 115.
