Scholarship: $500 Essay Contest for Black and Latino High School Seniors

 

I was sent an email today advising of a scholarship opportunity, and thought I would pass it along to our SAT and College Admissions blog readers. After all, every little bit helps when it comes to paying for college! Details on the essay contest below.

Cultivating Aspiring Leaders presents the third “Get Involved With Issues that Affect Your Community” essay competition. The essay contest winner will receive a $500 scholarship!

Contestants must meet the following requirements to compete in the essay competition (below):

 

  1. African-American or Latino student
  2. High school senior
  3. 3.0 minimum GPA
  4. Total household income $100,000 or less


Essay Question: "Immigration has been an issue of intense national debate for decades. Nobel laureate Gary Becker proposes that the U.S. government sell the right to immigrate in the following article: www.economist.com/node/16424085?story_id=16424085. What do you think of his proposal?"

Essays should be no longer than 750 words. All contestants must submit the following here (please scan/PDF item 1 below) by September 15, 2010, 5PM EST:

  1. High school transcript
  2. Digital photo
  3. Essay (Microsoft Word format)
  4. Optional: 2 minute video presenting your essay (Please upload the video onto YouTube.com and include a link to your video.)


Proof of household income may be required of semi-finalists.
